“A slightly different approach”
“ One topic with a focused goal gives scrum team a clear mandate ”
With Lean Coffee we generally ask participants to bring topics that they want to discuss and then ask participants to vote on topics that they think is important to discuss. The higher number of votes on any topic is discussed first then followed by others. A time boxed event to discuss topics as long as the team is interested to talk about it else the topic is moved to the parking lot.
I also started with the more or less same format . However I quickly realised that doing so the team could come up with so many topics that would be very difficult to cover in a certain time box event. And we always tend to postpone it for next time and quite often we have to throw the topics away. The energy would have died out the next time to even get back to the undiscussed topic.
In order to counter that I tried a slightly different approach. So instead of participants to really bring a lot of topics, I asked them to only write down a single topic which they want to talk and state a clear objective underneath it. Now what does that do is it brings a clear focus on a topic. So each participant will definitely have a clear goal in mind whenever they want to bring a topic for discussion. As a result, solutions generally comes really fast as most of the time the solutions of complex problem are simple.
